Nigel Farage to Croatians: why on earth would you want to give up your hard won independence?

In his visit to Croatia on 6th of September 2011 in support of the NO argument in regards the country's EU membership, UKIP lider and EU MEP Nigel Farage gave his views on the state of the European Union and about Croatia's future in it:
“I would argue very strongly, that even if you were to join the European Union, now would be a very very poor time to do it. And just look at the structure, just look at the way this whole project operates. It is the European Commission, it is unelected bureaucracy that have the sole right of initiative.”
“They are the people that propose the legislation, all the European Parliament can do is to check it, to slow it, to amend it, perhaps change some of the grammar. But the real power in this union is not vested in democratic institutions, in fact from the very start, from Monnet onwards, it was designed that the EU would never be democratic.”
Further on, Farage said: “I would say to countries like you, whose independence was hard won and has been very short lived, why on earth would you give all of that up? It certainly doesn't make sense to me.”
He also remarked that in the EU there exists the kind of thinking that the EU creation was necessary in order to stop the wars on the continent, citing the past wars between France and Germany in 1870, 1914, and 1939, after which Mr Farage promptly reminded the Croatian people that they themselves have not so long ago been part of a similar union called Yugoslavia, which ended tragically.
